---- — CLINTON — A Camanche Middle School teacher is currently in Alaska, competing to be named the 2015 Iditarod Teacher on the Trail.
As previously reported by the Herald, Erin Montgomery learned in January that she was one of three finalists for the teacher on the trail contest, a nationwide competition for a chance to witness the world famous Iditarod dog sled race in person.
She left for Alaska on Saturday to face presentations and a series of interviews. An announcement on the panel’s decision will be made no later than April 2.
“I think it is a wonderful opportunity for not only Erin, but her students,” Superintendent Tom Parker said.
If chosen as the 2015 Iditarod Teacher on the Trail, she will begin working in June to develop a year-long lesson plan highlighting the race and the state of Alaska. She also will blog, complete volunteer work and spread the word about the Iditarod, before attending the race in March.
Montgomery attended the Camanche Board of Education meeting last week, detailing her trip to Alaska and the workshops and challenges she will complete as part of the process. A blog about the three finalists is available on the race’s website at Iditarod.com/zuma/teacher-on-the-trail-tm-finalists.
“The board is very pleased that Erin is pursuing this Teacher on the Trail opportunity and is very supportive of her,” Parker said.
