United Way meets mark

CLINTON — There was plenty of applause to go around Thursday during the United Way annual meeting at Rastrelli’s restaurant. And for good reason — the Clinton County chapter met its goal by 101 percent.

The 2013 campaign contributions show that the efforts of countless organizations throughout the region have raised nearly $7,000 more than the target — $626,977 to be precise. The focus for United Way is to foster a better community by focusing on education, income and health aid. Twenty local partner agencies receive the funds, including the Felix Adler Children’s Discovery Center, YWCA and Gateway Area Chapter of the American Red Cross.

Audit reports show United Way is in strong financial position, reported trustee Mark Ohnemus.

“You as a team have surpassed the goal,” he said, to more than 100 spectators at a luncheon. “What you were able to do was have a plan and execute that plan.”

In 2013, United Way handed out 26 grants locally. Ninety-nine percent of the money raised remains local ,according to a financial report available at the meeting. The group made six donations of $30,000 or more.

The American Red Cross received the largest sum — $55,745 — to fund disaster services. The YWCA received a $40,000 grant to fund its children’s center. Big Brothers Big Sisters, Skyline Center, Associate Benevolent Society and Information, Referral and Assistance Services received the other major donations. None of the grants dipped below $4,000 and totaled a $447,654 community investment.

Thursday also served as Tom Moser’s last day as Clinton United Way president. In his fourth year with the organization, Moser said his term taught him a lot about the great things the group achieves.

“I’ve learned more about how significant this organization is and the impact it has on the community,” Moser said. “It’s what’s done with the funding that continually makes a difference.

“Thank you for helping us more than anyone.”
