Firework safety, area displays

Legal fireworks in Iowa include snakes, sparklers and caps

CLINTON — The State Fire Marshal's Office is reminding Iowans and their guests to exercise care when using legal fireworks during the July Fourth holiday.

Legal fireworks include snakes, sparklers and caps. Officials say to read the instructions carefully and do not modify or bundle individual fireworks in any manner.

In Iowa during 2012, 53 fireworks-related fires were reported, followed by 26 in 2011. State Fire Marshal Ray Reynolds encourages parents to remain connected with their kids when using fireworks.

"Teach your kids fireworks safety, use legal fireworks as a family, and when your kids are with their friends use social media or text to remind them to be smart and safe,” Reynolds said.

For those who want to enjoy local fireworks displays, several area towns will put on fireworks shows July Fourth.

• Bellevue: Fireworks at dusk south of the lock and dam on Riverview Street.

• Clinton: Fireworks will follow the 7 p.m. LumberKings game at Ashford University Field.

• Grand Mound: Fireworks at dusk at Grand Mound ballpark, 300 East St..

• Mount Carroll, Ill: Fireworks at dusk at athletic field, 633 S. East St.

• Prophetstown, Ill.: Fireworks at dusk at Prophetstown State Park, East Riverside Drive and Park Avenue
