Man dies after falling through ice

SABULA — An Illinois man died Friday after falling through ice at a lake in Sabula.

Ronald Kerkhoff, 65, of German Valley, Ill., died at Mercy Medical Center North in Clinton, after falling through the ice at South Sabula Lake. His son, Jacob Kerkhoff, also fell in the lake and was transported to Mercy Medical Center North. His condition was unknown.

The Jackson County Sheriff’s office received a call at 4:39 p.m. Friday about two fishermen who fell through the ice. Sabula fire and ambulance departments rescued the Kerkhoffs from the water, before transporting them to Mercy.
