Clinton's newest unemployment rate points to improvement

CLINTON — Unemployment figures in the city of Clinton are continuing their pace of shrinking from year to year.

The unemployment rate for the city of Clinton dropped from 7 percent in February 2012 to 6.5 percent in February 2013, according to a report released Friday from the Iowa Workforce Development office.

The rate also dropped from 7 percent in January, a common occurrence from January to February around the state. All 25 Iowa cities in the unemployment data report showed gains in employment from January to February.

Clinton’s rate is now tied for the ninth highest unemployment rate among the 25 biggest cities in the state. In January, Clinton had the 10th-highest rate in the state.

It’s not unusual for cities to experience higher unemployment numbers from December to January, only to see them fall in February and the spring months.

The last time the city hadn’t improved its unemployment rate on a year-to-year basis was August 2011.

Clinton County’s rate also dropped in February, from a 6.9 percent unemployment rate in January to a 6.5 percent unemployment rate in February.

The county also is ahead of last year’s pace. The county registered a 7 percent unemployment figure in February 2012.

Jackson County also experienced a drop in unemployment from month-to-month, from 7.4 percent in January to 6.9 percent in February.
