Clinton man charged with assaulting jailer

CLINTON — A correctional officer at the Clinton County jail required medical attention Wednesday after an alleged assault by an inmate.

James McKinley Douglas, of Clinton, has been charged with willful injury causing serious injury and assault on jailer-habitual offender, after an altercation Wednesday with correctional officer Jessica Wright. Douglas appeared in court Thursday and is being held on $25,000 cash bond.

He has two prior felony convictions.

According to court documents, correctional officers in the Clinton County jail heard a loud commotion in the area of the attorney/law library room at 7:50 a.m. Wednesday.

Officers found Wright lying unresponsive in a hallway outside the law library. Douglas was the only person in the room. Douglas told Sgt. Joe Steffen that "she laid her hands on me...Joe you don't do that," according to court documents.

After becoming responsive, Wright told Steffen that she was going to move Douglas out of the room, and then he hit her in the head, and when she reached for her radio microphone, he knocked it out of her hand.

Wright had blood dripping from her nose, according to court documents. She was taken to the emergency room and diagnosed with a broken nose and a concussion.

Douglas will make another appearance in court April 19.
