Two options remain for road name change

CLINTON — Clinton City Council members will have two options to consider when they discuss renaming a Clinton street in honor of area veterans.

The City Services Committee on Wednesday forwarded two suggestions to the next Committee of the Whole meeting for the entire council to discuss: renaming Riverview Drive to Veterans Memorial Drive or renaming Liberty Avenue to Veterans Memorial Drive South.

The item came before the City Services Committee after At-Large Councilwoman Jennifer Graf suggested the city reconsider the original proposal from Clinton resident and veteran Bob Soesbe to rename Liberty Avenue.

She explained residents had suggested Riverview Drive would make a more appropriate veteran-honoring road, prompting the council to send the item back to the committee level for further vetting.

"The decision's that's here is, if this is a naming change that you want to make, where is it you want to make this at," City Administrator Jessica Kinser told committee members Wednesday.

Ward 1 Councilwoman Maggie Klaes asked the committee to consider renaming Liberty Avenue to Veterans Memorial Drive South to honor veterans as well as former South Clinton residents.

Clinton resident and World War II veteran Don Krambeck requested the city rename Riverview Drive for veterans because it's a more appealing area than Liberty Avenue.

"I think that we would be blessing the park that we have there," Krambeck said.

Unlike renaming Liberty Avenue, which claims no addresses, some addresses such as the marina's and the Clinton Area Showboat Theatre's would need to be changed if the council opted to rename Riverview Drive.

Committee members Bev Hermann and Charlie Mulholland felt Riverview Drive would be a preferable option not only because of the visual appeal, but because it seems more apt for another memorial.

"That would be the easiest place to decorate, too. And people could go down there at 20 miles an hour, not 50," Mulholland said.

This won't be the first time Riverview Drive has been up for a name change. In 2006, Soesbe, who was then a council member, asked the council to consider making the same switch to Veterans Memorial Drive.

At the time, council members and others voiced opposition to the change and Soesbe withdrew his request.
