Clinton man gets suspended sentence for harassment

CLINTON — A Clinton man received a suspended jail sentence for harassing his wife and mother-in-law outside of the Clinton County Courthouse in January.

Cole D. Thomas, 28, 2022 McKinley St., was found guilty of third-degree harassment and disorderly conduct. He was ordered to serve 30 days in the Clinton County Jail for the first charge. The sentence was suspended and he must complete 12 months of probation. He was fined $500 for the disorderly conduct charge.

According to court documents, the defendant’s wife and mother-in-law had left the courthouse at noon Jan. 10 after a hearing for a no-contact order. As the victims were walking to their vehicle, Thomas exited a red blazer and approached his wife, screaming and shaking his fist. The affidavit continues that the defendant told the victim “you’ll get what’s coming to you” and insulted her, using profanity.

Assistant Clinton County Attorney Cheryl Newport was in the parking lot and witnessed the incident, according to court documents. She intervened and told Thomas to stop several times, but he refused and became belligerent to her, according to the affidavit.

Court documents continue that another courthouse employee witnessed the incident and told the victims to get in the car and leave. The employee then drove over to the courthouse to seek assistance from sheriff’s deputies. According the the affidavit, when deputies exited the courthouse, the defendant returned to his vehicle and left.

A no-contact order is in place for 12 months.
