Camanche reconsiders investment in CRDC

CAMANCHE — After much debate and indecision, the Camanche City Council has committed a $3,000 donation to the Clinton Regional Development Corp.

While the investment is a substantial cut from the city’s original $10,000 contribution, CRDC President and CEO Mike Kirchhoff is glad to have Camanche back on board.

“As with any of our community partners we’re happy to have any contribution,” Kirchhoff said. “We’re disappointed that they’ve reduced the amount but, on the other hand, we understand their financial situation.”

The council had argued the investment for several weeks during budget discussions, trying to come up with a way to balance a $110,000 deficit and finding a portion of the solution with the cut to the CRDC membership.

After making the final decision to cut the $10,000, despite reservations from City Administrator Tom Roth, the council came back to the discussion on Tuesday after learning other area communities were contributing less than they were.

“We ran into some tightness with our budget and we were looking for ways to make a few cuts here and there to meet that budget,” Mayor Ken Fahlbeck said. “This is one of the ways we talked about possibly doing that was to lower that $10,000 after we found out that some other cities in the surrounding areas donate less than that $10,000 as well.”

While most of the council liked the idea of getting back into a partnership with the CRDC, not everyone agreed during Tuesday’s vote.

Councilman Mike McManus held steady to the council’s original decision to cut the membership fee to the CRDC, but his lone negative vote couldn’t hold off the four who were in favor of it.

But before the vote could be tallied, the council needed to decide where it would get the $3,000 to contribute.

Remembering a suggestion from councilman Marvin Lind, councilman Trevor Willis thought taking the money from the City Hall improvement fund was the city’s best option.
