CLINTON – Dan Sullivan called the community outreach “overwhelming.” And because of the public, he said his Adcraft Printwear business can strive for growth.
“I want to thank the general public for the unexpected outcry,” Sullivan said Tuesday during the Clinton City Council meeting. “I think that may have prompted (the council) in part to come and talk to us. I appreciate the lobby from the community.”
Council members did an about face Tuesday after learning the issues surrounding a zoning request from the Sullivan group.
Adcraft owners had earlier received approval from the city’s Plan Commission to rezone their lot – located at 801 S. Third St. – from its current C-2 commercial designation to M-2 Industrial. However, even though the council set a public hearing during its March 11 meeting, council members voted against an accompanying ordinance. They cited appearance codes that needed to be maintained under the commercial zoning, and it was perceived that Adcraft was seeking to skirt those ordinances in order to construct a cheap facility.
Councilmen John Rowland, Grant Wilke and Ed O’Neill all spoke with management in the days after the meeting, realizing the council made a mistake.
“The thing that really made my decision easy was (Adcraft) didn’t even ask for this zoning change,” O’Neill said Tuesday. “One thing we may want to keep in mind is that if there is a zoning change made on a contingency and it doesn’t happen it needs to revert back.”
In 2001, the Adcraft lot was zoned industrial when a “prospective property owner” approached the council with ideas for upscale housing. Clinton approved his request to rezone the property, but the Sullivans said they were unaware that any of this was happening.
“I want to commend the council for instead of letting something like this die to do some investigating for what might have been a mistake,” Sullivan said.
