Man charged with felony assault

CLINTON — A Clinton man is facing a felony charge for allegedly choking his girlfriend Sunday morning.

Michael A. McClellan, 47, 202 N. Bluff Blvd., apartment 101, is being held at the Clinton County jail on a $5,000 cash-only bond for domestic abuse assault with strangulation and causing bodily injury, and for obstruction of emergency communications. He was arrested Sunday morning after Clinton police were dispatched to his residence for a woman yelling “help” outside the apartment complex.

According to court documents, officers could hear a female crying and a man talking to her from the defendant’s apartment. The affidavit continues that the alleged victim opened the door and had a small mark between her eyes and a fat lip.

The victim told officers that McClellan demanded some Xanax and became agitated when she would not give him any, according to the affidavit. He allegedly pulled her hair while making threatening statements and took her phone when she attempted to call 911. Court documents indicate the alleged victim feared for her life.

According to the affidavit, McClellan allegedly began choking the female, causing broken blood vessels in her eyes and then struck her in the mouth. When the victim opened the door to yell for help, the defendant allegedly grabbed her and pulled her back into the apartment by the hair and threw her onto the bed, according to court documents.

He then allegedly jumped on top of her, punched her in both eyes, grabbed her head and chin, and made threatening remarks, according to the affidavit.

A class D felony, the domestic abuse charge carries no more than five years in prison and a fine of between $750 and $7,500. Obstruction of emergency communications is a simple misdemeanor.
