CLINTON — A West Carroll High School science teacher has been accused of having a sexual relationship with a 17-year-old student.
Chelsey J. Wheeler, 24, of Lanark, Ill., turned herself in Monday on a warrant for criminal sexual assault, a Class I felony, at the Carroll County Sheriff’s Office.
Wheeler posted 10 percent of a $50,000 bond that same day and was released.
Savanna, Ill., Police Chief Michael Moon said the student was a 17-year-old male, and the allegations were reported to police by the West Carroll superintendent and high school principal.
Superintendent Craig Mathers declined to comment on how long the alleged relationship lasted, or how it came to his attention.
Wheeler tendered her written resignation effective April 4, according to Mathers. The board of education accepted her resignation Tuesday. Wheeler’s first year with the district was the 2012-13 school year.
Wheeler’s first appearance in court is set for 10 a.m. April 28.
The investigation is ongoing and being assisted by the Carroll County Sheriff’s Office, the Illinois State Police and the Carroll County State’s Attorney’s office.
