Clinton bandshell to get a new life

CLINTON — Funds earmarked for Vision Iowa will be used to update the Clinton bandshell.

“I can’t think of anything that would be greater for Clinton than to have a new bandshell,” Clinton County Development Association Director Alice Schnepel said. “I mean really and truly, this has been around since the dark ages, I think.”

The CCDA agreed to finance the remodeling of the bandshell, with a maximum of $145,900. Any funds not used for the project will revert to the CCDA.

Fire Chief Mike Brown said during Wednesday’s meeting that the volunteer engineer estimated this amount.

This amount is higher than first estimated due to requirements the city has to fulfill for handling the project.

“It’s basically just a face-lift of what is there,” Brown said.

The project would include updates to American with Disabilities Act concerns. Instead of rebuilding the ramp in back, plans include a door in one of the towers with a power lift.

The city has a final disbursement coming from the CCDA for the marina Vision Iowa projects. Members of the Clinton-based nonprofit organization, Vision 8, approached the Clinton City Council about using these funds to improve the bandshell.

Director Matthew Stammeyer had no problem with designating the Vision Iowa funds for the project. He reminded the board that the bandshell was originally part of the Vision Iowa project. The deadline would be Dec. 31, which is the original Vision Iowa deadline.

Brown told the board that the bandshell is not utilized as much as it could be, adding it sits empty a lot. He estimated it is used a dozen times a year.

“I feel that if we make it look good, it will be used a lot more,” Brown said. “I do think if you build it and do it, it will bring some more life to the riverfront.”
