MAQUOKETA — The Jackson County Attorney's Office has found a Maquoketa police officer was justified in using deadly force after a motorists fired repeatedly at him.
The Iowa Department of Public Safety on Monday released details of the April 1 shooting, including dash-cam video played at a news conference.
The video shows Sgt. Brendan Zeimet approaching a pickup truck illegally parked on a Maquoketa street. A man, later identified as Aaron Edward Scott, steps out of the pickup and fires an assault weapon as Zeimet retreats.
An inquiry shows Scott fired at least 14 times, and up to 19 times. Zeimet fired seven times.
Scott suffered a leg wound. He later died of a self-inflicted gunshot wound.
The county attorney found Zeimet, who suffered an arm wound, was justified in his actions.
