Liberty Avenue name change on hold

CLINTON — More discussion needs to take place before Clinton has a Veteran’s Memorial Drive, the Clinton City Council decided Tuesday.

A resolution to change the name of Liberty Avenue from South 14th Street to South Fourth Street to Veteran’s Memorial Drive was before the council during its regular meeting, but council members unanimously sent the item back to the City Services Committee.

At-large Councilwoman Jennifer Graf made the motion to move the item back to the committee, suggesting a different Clinton street might be more appropriate for the name. She said she received a number of phone calls regarding the name change from residents who proposed Riverview Drive rather than Liberty Avenue is the street that should be renamed in honor of area veterans. Reasons included the memorials already along the drive and the ability to meditate on the street’s namesakes.

“I don’t envision a place on Camanche Avenue or Liberty Square where you could pull over and you could have solemn reflection and tribute to the people who have given us years of service,” Graf said.

Councilwoman Maggie Klaes opposed Graf’s motion, instead suggesting the new street name should incorporate pieces of Liberty Avenue and Veteran’s Memorial Drive in order to keep a piece of South Clinton’s history.

Acknowledging her fellow council members sentiments, Ward 2 Councilwoman Julie Allesee agreed the item should move back to committee where it could be discussed by committee members as well as Clinton resident Bob Soesbe, who made the original name change suggestion.

“I think that giving the thoughts that Maggie’s presented, the ones that Jennifer’s discussed, it needs to go back to committee and re-think the whole thing and involve Mr. Soesbe, who brought it to our attention and then come back to us,” Allesee said.

At-large councilman John Rowland and Ward 3 Councilwoman Bev Hermann also felt Tuesday’s meeting wasn’t the right time to change the street name, advising against the city jumping into the name change without having more discussion and resident input.

Graf’s motion to send the name change back to the committee passed 7-0.
