CLINTON — City officials wanted to know how many private contractors wanted to conduct large-item pickup. The answer: zero.
The Sept. 17 deadline passed without anyone submitting proposals to pick up items that cannot fit in residents’ 95 gallon solid waste containers such as furniture, carpeting, large toys such as dismantled swing sets, swimming pools, bikes, etc. and household building and remodeling materials.
In August, the City Services Committee sent out request for proposals for the service with the idea that the contract would be approved at Tuesday’s City Council meeting and then likely performed in October.
However, things didn’t pan out that way and now the city must revisit how it would like to proceed with large-item pickup. That discussion will happen at the Oct. 8 council meeting.
The large-item pickup program was reduced from two times a year to one late summer pickup last year. The City Services Committee earlier this year forwarded a proposal to eliminate the service altogether for one year, but city officials decided instead to see if a private company could better provide the service.
