CLINTON Ten local families will receive a gift this holiday season thanks to Slumberland Furniture and the Salvation Army.
As part of the Making Homes for Holidays' program and the 40 Winks Foundation, Slumberland Furniture in Clinton will donate 10 mattresses and 10 box springs to families in need this Christmas.
"This is our second year and we have partnered with the Salvation Army to find families that are in need," Slumberland owner and manager Tim Jackson said. "It's a great thing for us to do and Slumberland has been doing it for many, many years."
The Making Homes for Holidays program, established in 1993, was created by Slumberland Furniture to provide families with new beds during the holiday season. Over the course of the 20 year program, Slumberland has worked with local charity organizations to donate more than 20,000 new mattresses and box springs to families throughout the Midwest.
To find local families in need, Jackson and his management team reached out to the Salvation Army of Clinton to find those families, a process that Lt. Jeanette Jensen said was more difficult than she had anticipated.
"Determining who gets a mattress has been our biggest struggle," Jensen said. "The people we work with are a proud people. We have some clients that are unwilling to give a phone number, let alone tell us when they're in need. A lot of them are so timid to ask for things but when people don't express it, it makes our jobs twice as difficult."
Some of the families Jensen and the Salvation Army volunteers have reached out to include recent house fire victims who have lost everything and are struggling after the tragedy.
But, according to Jensen, getting in contact with some of those people is a very challenging process.
"When people are faced with a situation that leaves them helpless, we are there to give them hope," Jensen said. "But, I don't think a lot of people know about this, so we're kind of shooting in the dark here."
