UPDATE: Names released related to boating accident

CLINTON — The Clinton County Sheriff's Office today released the names of victims associated with a fatal boating accident on the Mississippi River near the mouth of the Elk River, north of Clinton.

According to a press release, the body of Nancy Selser, 85, of Clinton, was recovered from the water after the boat capsized Saturday morning.

The driver of the boat, Charles Selser, 60, of Clinton, and the vessel they were traveling in, remain missing. A search of the area has resumed but is being hindered by wind and rough water.

Edwin Selser, 30,  of Davenport, and his two children aged five and seven, made it to shore.

The press release states all subjects except for Charles were wearing life jackets.

Deputies were dispatched at 11:34 a.m. Saturday for a report of a boating accident with victims in the water. The boat capsized in the Mississippi in rough water and all five occupants of the boat went into the water. The boat reportedly sank in the area.

Lieutenant Tom Paarman said rescuers are uncertain what caused the boat to capsize, but are speculating it was weather related due to the wind and waves.

The Clinton County Sheriff’s Office is being assisted today by Clinton County Conservation officers, Clinton County Sheriff’s Reserves K-9 Search and Rescue, Clinton County Emergency Management, and U.S. Fish and Wildlife. The Coast Guard has been notified of the situation.

The Sheriff’s Office was assisted on scene of the initial call Saturday by Andover Fire Department, Clinton Fire Deptartment, Camanche Fire Deptartment, Sabula Fire Deptartment, Savanna Fire Deptartment, Thomson Fire Deptartment, U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service, Clinton County Conservation, Clinton County Sheriff’s Reserves K-9 Search and Rescue, Iowa DNR, the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers and Clinton County Communications.

The initial search utilized approximately 17 boats and 50 personnel.
