New local bargaining unit formed

CLINTON — A new collective bargaining unit has formed to represent Clinton County deputies, correctional officers and secretaries.

“We just did not have strong backing from the former union,” said Deputy Jeff Ernst, president of the Clinton County Sheriff’s Office Employee Union.

He added employees did not like the old union’s bargaining style and felt they were not getting good representation.

During previous negotiations, one representative from each side could speak.

“This time around under our new union, it was an open table,” Ernst said.

He said employees could speak their peace and administrators could explain why they were denying a request.

The Clinton County Board of Supervisors approved the new union contract Monday. Ernst said the agreement took a lot of work on both sides.

“It’s a good workable contract between the two sides,” Ernst said.

This two-year contract includes a 2 percent pay increase for the 2013-2014 fiscal year and a 2.5 percent increase for 2014-2015. As of July 1, hourly wages are: $24.57 for deputies, $17.74 for correctional officers/civilians/cooks, and $17.74 for secretaries. The second and third shift differential was raised from 25 to 40 cents.

The contract also adopts the same sick time policy and insurance deductibles and out-of-pocket maximums as the other county unions. Maximum accrued compensatory time went from 240 hours to 120 hours.
