May unemployment rate holds steady

CLINTON — The unemployment rate in Clinton held steady in May at 5.3 percent, the lowest level since December 2008.

According to the latest unemployment figures released by the Iowa Workforce Development office, the city of Clinton was one of five of Iowa’s 23 largest cities to see no change from April to May. Of the remaining cities, 11 experienced a month to month increase in unemployment, while the remaining seven had unemployment dips. In May, Clinton was tired for eighth highest unemployment rate out of the state’s largest cities.

The employment situation in Clinton has improved from year-to-year. In May 2012, Clinton had a 6.4 percent unemployment rate.

The city has seen consistent improvements in unemployment numbers in the past several months. In March the city had a 5.7 percent unemployment rate. In February, Clinton had a 6.5 percent unemployment rate. The unemployments rate was 7 percent and 5.9 percent in January and December, respectively.

Iowa’s seasonally adjusted unemployment rate dropped for the third consecutive month in May, falling to 4.6 percent. The current rate is down from 4.7 percent in April, and 5.3 percent in May 2012. Meanwhile, the U.S. unemployment rate rose to 7.6 percent in May from 7.5 percent in April.

Clinton County’s unemployment rate dropped slightly from 5.1 percent in April to 5 percent in May. In May 2012, Clinton County had a 5.9 percent unemployment rate. Jackson County’s unemployment rate fell 1 percent from April to May, where it landed at 4.6 percent.
