Summer Nights a big hit

FULTON, Ill. — The first of three Fulton Summer Nights led off with a bang on Thursday as the community came out in full to support the family oriented night.

With two inflatable bounce houses, professional face painting, a slew of free games and musical entertainment, residents and visitors of all kinds knew what a gem they had right there in their river town.

“They keep drawing new things every year and it’s nice because we didn’t have something like this in Fulton before,” said Kim Pence as her children, Aidan and Ella, received elegant facial decorations from professional face painter Kristal Shaff. “They’ve always had sports and stuff like that but it’s not the same.”

As the Whiteside County Cattlemen’s Association cooked up hot dogs on the grill provided by the evening’s sponsors the Second and First Reformed churches of Fulton, the smell of summer was in the air.

Along with a quick meal for $2, free cotton candy was also available to children, and adults, of all ages.

But not only were the kids entertained, professional country singer Brooke Byam wowed the crowed with her Nashville talents, adding a little banter with her grandfather, who sang along and played the keyboard.

And while the smiles were clear to see, Pence was just happy to get herself and her kids out to enjoy the summer.

“This gives us, everyone, a chance to get out,” she said. “The kids get to see their friends, which is important and we just get to spend time with the people of the community.”

The next Fulton Summer Nights event will begin at 6 p.m. July 10 near the windmill in Fulton.
