Send in the clowns

CLINTON — Families are invited to a Saturday of music, games, train rides and clowns at the 25th Felix Adler Day that is set for June 21.

For a quarter of a century, members of the community have gathered together to celebrate and honor Clinton’s famous clown, Felix Adler, born June 17, 1895. Adler became a world famous clown with Ringling Bros. and Barnum & Bailey Circus and his descendants still live in Clinton. Sarah Lind, director of the Felix Adler Children’s Discovery Center, is awed by the support the community has shown for this event throughout the years.

“It’s a neat little tribute that anyone with a dream can go out and try to achieve it,” Lind said.

The family event will run from 9:30 a.m. until 4:30 p.m. in the parking lot of the Felix Adler Children’s Discovery Center. Admission to the festival and the Discovery Center is free for the day. Parents will need to purchase $5 punch cards (with 10 punches) if their children want to ride ponies, play in inflatable slides and other structures, ride the Sawmill train or go into the petting zoo area.

“They can pay as much or as little as they want,” Lind said. “One could bring a family to Felix Adler Days and not spend any money.”

Lind is expecting roughly 1,000 guests at the event, which she said will offer a wide selection of activities. This year, she is most excited about a 60-foot tent that has been rented to provide some shade for the showcase stage area.

“We will have some nice shady places to sit,” Lind said.

The day also will see the addition of two more inflatables, as well a a magician. Those attending the event can enjoy music from the River City Municipal Band, the Riverside Brass Ensemble and the Slough Buoys, as well as performances from the Clinton Area Showboat Theatre’s children’s theater and the Carousel School of Dance. Local organizations and businesses will set up booths at the events,

In honor of the annual event, the YWCA will open its pool for free open swim, beginning at 1:30 p.m. For more information on Felix Adler Day call the museum at 243-3600 or email to
