Storm rocks region (with VIDEO & PHOTO ALBUM)

Clinton residents and emergency personnel had a busy morning today as Sunday night’s storm knocked down a large number of trees.

Video: Damage from last night's storm was seen along Second Ave. South and First Ave.

According to the National Weather Service, wind gusts of as much as 45 miles per hour were seen at 12:15 a.m. At 12:35 a.m. wind gusts were at 37 miles per hour. Wind was at 12 miles per hour at 12:55 a.m.

Between midnight and 3 a.m., 1.84 inches of rain fell on Clinton.

Emergency Management Coordinator Chance Kness said storm damage happened primarily in central Clinton, between Second Avenue South and Third Avenue North. He could not comment this morning on the full extent of the damage.

"Most of what I saw was in the dark, so it was hard to gauge," Kness said.

Driving around Clinton this morning, a person could see a great number of trees laying in yards and roadways. Police and road crew vehicles also were visible around town.

Along Second Avenue South, traffic was slowed in front of Washington Middle School, where two trees fell in front of the building. Across the street, a crew from Foley Tree Care removed and broke up trees that had fallen on or near houses.

Al Morrow, 724 Second Ave. South, was up early this morning after a tree in his backyard fell onto his garage, destroying it and two cars parked behind it. Next door to Morrow, his neighbor’s roof was damaged by a tree as well. Morrow said that last night he heard the alerts about the storm, but did not expect the damage.

“I woke up and looked out my bedroom window and saw the tree fall down and hit the garage,” Morrow said.

Trees also were down on First Avenue, where one tree in the roadway made it impossible for traffic to pass. Vehicles also had to keep a lookout for some debris on North Fourth Street.
