CAMANCHE — Nearly eight months after purchasing the former Camanche Pharmacy building and surrounding property for a new city hall, the city of Camanche has sold off some of the nearby land.
During a meeting on Tuesday, the Camanche City Council approved a $45,000 purchase offer from Litehouse Reality LLC for one parcel of land and approximately 48 feet of a second parcel adjacent to the pharmacy building that appraised for around $85,000. Though the city is gaining the $45,000 and possible sales tax revenue from what the council calls a “potential business” opportunity at the property, not everyone supported the sale approval.
Councilman Trevor Willis has been a consistent voice against the sale, calling it a mistake and regularly voting no in every facet of the negotiations with Litehouse Reality. But on Tuesday, Willis wasn’t the only opponent to the property sale.
During a public hearing prior to the council’s official approval, Camanche resident Allan Murphy expressed his opinions about the property and asked the council to reconsider its support of the sale.
“I can see where wanting to sell lot two would be a benefit if we’ve got a proposed business wanting to come in and needs the space,” Murphy said. “But I really think we’re shooting ourselves in the foot by giving off that parcel (48 feet) off of lot one.”
Murphy’s concern is if city councilmen decide to terminate plans to convert the old pharmacy into a new Camanche City Hall, when they look to sell the building to a potential developer they are losing out on that 48 feet of property that could benefit a new business.
With limited parking at the pharmacy building already, Murphy’s suggestion was to maintain ownership of the 48 feet so it could be used for parking or other needs no matter what the building’s future holds.
