UPDATE: Clinton man remains hospitalized after pit bull attack

CLINTON — UPDATED - 7/3/2013, 5:25 p.m.: The investigation continues into a pit bull attack that sent a Clinton man to University of Iowa Hospitals and Clinics in Iowa City for treatment.

Emergency personnel responded Tuesday evening to the 200 block of 16th Place for two large dogs attacking a man, Benjamin Nave, 31, 716 S. Sixth St.

Nave’s condition is not being released. A family member of the victim stated as of late Wednesday afternoon he has had one surgery and faces two more, sustaining injuries to both arms.

The first officers at the scene shot at the dogs to make them stop attacking the victim. Both dogs fled the scene.

Karrie McKie, 242 16th Place, came out of her house when she heard gunshots, quickly going back inside.

“I didn’t know what the heck was going on,” McKie said.

All she knew at first was that police drove past her house and blocked off the area. From her house, she could see officers shining flashlights and eventually heard someone say that they got one of the dogs.

According to a Wednesday morning press release from Clinton Police Sgt. Colin Reid, one of the dogs was located and killed. Officers did not locate the second dog. Attempts to confirm with Clinton police if the dog remains at large were not successful prior to press time.

Police have identified the owner of the dogs, but have not said whether a citation has been issued. McKie said almost every house in the neighborhood has dogs, many of them pitbulls. She has two pitbulls that she described as “gentle.”

McKie added that dogs do not typically run at large in the neighborhood. She keeps her dogs inside, except when in her fenced-in yard.
