Clinton company to pay EPA hazardous waste fine

CLINTON —

A Clinton manufacturer of metal racks and shelving brackets for refrigerators has agreed to pay a fine to settle an Environmental Protection Agency complaint about its handling of hazardous waste.

The EPA says in a statement Tuesday that Collis Inc. will pay $31,379. The company also says in a settlement agreement with EPA that it will spend nearly $92,000 to replace high-mercury fluorescent light fixtures with low-mercury fixtures and bulbs, and reduce the generation of hazardous solvent waste.

EPA filed a complaint after an inspection found the company was storing hazardous waste without a permit and failed to manage used oil in accordance with regulations.

The company, a division of Fort Smith, Ark.-based SSW Holding Co., certifies in the settlement agreement that it is in compliance with EPA regulations.
