Clinton Police Chief Brian Guy hopes to have the former Building and Neighborhood Services space ready by the end of the month to alleviate some of the department’s pressing storage needs.
The Clinton City Council last month approved a resolution allowing the Clinton Police Department to use the empty city-owned building at 110 Fifth Ave. South for storage.
“We’re very happy. I applaud the City Council’s foresight in recognizing our space needs,” Guy said.
Before police officials can start moving any evidence to the building it will need to be updated with an alarm, additional shelving and connectivity to the police department one block south. Guy said he would like to see these updates, which will cost around $5,000, completed by the end of the month. Interim City Administrator Jessica Kinser said the funds will come from the police department budget, but she and Guy have yet to discuss the details.
A meeting space, a space for cold case investigations and an area for staging records that are set to be digitized would also be incorporated into the building. The additional 7,000 square feet will allow the police department to manage the space crunch. Ultimately, though, Guy said police operations need to have a larger, more permanent space. According to a space needs study performed in 2001, the department should be operating out of 24,000 square feet. The building the city has been renting to house the police department for the past two decades offers only 10,000 square feet. Before that, Clinton police operated out of the Clinton Law Center, meaning the city has been paying rent to house police operations for 45 years.
Guy waits for the city’s economic climate to improve and allow for the construction of a new or more permanent facility.
Meanwhile, he’s content to have more room.
“We’ll make it work until such time we have a building to make everything work under one roof,” Guy said.
