Time to spruce up the town

CLINTON — Business and property owners will be sprucing up downtown Clinton on Saturday morning.

“We feel if downtown Clinton looks nice it’s a good reflection on the entire city,” Deb Wiese, from Deb Wiese’s Bookkeeping & Tax Service, 514 S. Second St., said.

Tim Clark, owner of Zirkelbach Home Appliances, 225 Fifth Ave. South, said volunteers will be picking up the winter trash and getting the area ready for spring and summer. Participants will pick up garbage and debris from the streets and alleys. Others will spread mulch and get flowerpots ready for planting.

While a number of downtown merchants will be involved in the cleanup, Wiese and Clark are asking for more volunteers. The cleanup will focus on the 12-block Clinton Self-Supported Municipal Improvement District. However, this depends on how much help the group has.

“If we only have five volunteers, obviously we’re not going to get to cover much,” Wiese said.

Volunteers will meet at 8 a.m. Saturday in the municipal parking lot in the 200 block of Sixth Avenue South. Wiese asks that volunteers bring gloves, lawn tools and mulch if possible. Those interested can either call Wiese at (563) 212-9335 or simply show up Saturday morning.
