Weather website offers up-to-the-minute data, analysis

CLINTON -- His years as a broadcast meteorologist with KWQC-TV and present home, WQAD-TV, have established Terry Swails as a mainstay of weather information for many in the Gateway area.

And while there are many online sources of weather forecasts, Swails believes his new website Tswails.com offers something unique — a weather website specially tailored for the MidWest.

In developing the website, Swails focused on four key features to make it useful and interesting for the audience. As Swails writes, “I put everything I would want as a meteorologist into the site. It’s fun, informative, and even educational.”

First, Tswails.com offers an animated radar for the Midwest region, with the capability to easily hone in on a particular area, simply by clicking on it.

In addition, when a visitor clicks any point on the radar map, the current weather condition and seven-day forecast for the location immediately comes up.

If the selected location has any current severe weather warnings, the lightning bolt icon on the page will activate and flash, alerting the visitor to view the details of the warning.

Perhaps the most unique feature of Tswails.com is the weather analysis and insights from Swails in the site’s Weather Journal. Visitors will find no shortage of personalized, understandable information about weather events affecting the region, from explanations of weather processes in motion to how a forecast is developed. Swails invites the reader on a journey from the beginning of a weather event through its conclusion, complete with photos and informative graphics to illustrate and tie it all together.

Since its launch in December, Tswails.com has seen nearly 2 million visits. Swails’ wife of 26 years, and partner in this new, independent venture, Carolyn Wettstone, credits the early success to Swails’ well-known credibility and passion for weather in addition to the heightened interest in recent months due to the severe winter conditions.
