Dog owner charged in attack is court no-show

CLINTON — The alleged owner of two pit bulls that attacked a Clinton man in July, did not show up for court on Thursday.

Ryan K. Blume, 215 16th Place, was scheduled to appear at 10 a.m. Thursday at the Clinton County Courthouse for a bench trail on eight citations. Those charges are having a dangerous dog, allowing a dog to run at large, no proof of rabies vaccination and no proof of city license for each of the pit bulls involved in the attack.

Blume faces both fines and jail time if he is convicted. Now, with a failure to appear in court warrant, he could face an even heavier sentence.

The attack, which took place on July 2, happened in the 200 block of 16th Place in Clinton as victim Benjamin Nave, 31, 716 S. Sixth St., walked from a friend's house to Hy-Vee.

After being transferred to the University of Iowa hospital, Nave underwent several surgeries to both arms to repair his injuries before being released.

Charges were originally filed and an arrest warrant issued against Blume a week after the attack, but it wasn't until he turned himself in on July 17 that the arrest was made.

Blume now faces a failure to appear bench warrant, in addition to the prior eight citations originally issued.
