New event will promote Blue Zones initiatives

CLINTON — Getting active and healthy continue to be central themes in the community as Blue Zones efforts continue.

Missing out on the first round of the Blue Zones Project has only made the initiative stronger in the area.

“While we didn’t get chosen on the first round, we have made so many positive changes,” Blue Zones committee member Michelle Cullen said. “It’s actually kind of a good thing that we weren’t chosen the first round. They will have time to work out the bugs in the program.”

The newest Blue Zones inspired event, Be Fit Clinton, brings the community together for health and wellness while featuring organizations in the community that represent the principles of the Blue Zones. Participants can learn more about the power nine principles, see demonstrations and participate in activities for kids and whole family.

All events take place from 4:30 to 7 p.m. Aug. 31 at Riverview Park.

Health and wellness fun kicks off with square dancing at 4:30 p.m., followed by tumbling at 5 p.m. Kids ages 17 or younger can take part in the Kids Splash Dash at 6 p.m. Cost is $5 and the first 100 kids to register get a T-shirt.

Prizes and medals will be awarded to participants. Ashford University track team members will lead warm ups for the dash at 5:30 p.m.

Adults and children will also get the chance to dance the night away with a Zumba demonstration at 6:30 p.m. All evening there will be prize drawings, mini golf, music, fitness challenge, wine tasting, inflatables and free blood pressure checks.

Those who vote for Clinton to become a Blue Zones community at the event will receive one of 250 free LumberKings tickets good for that night’s game. For more information, call (563) 244-5801.

The Clinton Blue Zones committee is currently working on resubmitting the application to become a Blue Zones demonstration site for the second round of the project this fall. The second round of communities in Iowa will be chosen in January.

A third round is expected to follow to complete the project in Iowa.
