Labor Congress organizes annual picnic

CLINTON — Labor Day is a time to celebrate the hard-working men and women of America and since the early 1900s the first Monday of September has been the day to commemorate their efforts.

Although the history has not been confirmed on who first proposed the holiday, it has been celebrated around the nation since its charter by the American Federation of Labor.

Each state has unique events to celebrate the holiday, but some cities will host community picnics to honor workers, and the city of Clinton will do just that.

The Clinton Labor Congress has organized a picnic for Sunday, Sept. 1. It will be held from noon to 4 p.m. at the Eagle Point Park Lodge in Clinton.

Labor Congress secretary Robert Krajnovich said the picnic is financed by the donor members of the organization and is free to all members of the community.

“We want to have people recognize that this is for the working people that made this country great,” Krajnovich said. “We welcome anybody and everybody to celebrate with us.”

The picnic will offer hot dogs, baked beans, chips and beverages to all who attend as well as children’s games, raffles and door prizes.

In past years, politicians like U.S. Sen. Tom Harkin and Congressman Bruce Braley have attended the community picnic and this year is no different.

Congressman Dave Loebsack has confirmed his presence at this year’s celebration and representatives of Harkin and Braley are slated to attend. Although a presentation is not planned, Krajnovich said any of the political figures are welcome to speak at the picnic.

Krajnovich said he expects approximately 800 people to attend the picnic on Sunday along with the many volunteers and Labor Congress members who helped organize the event.

“We work very hard. It takes us the better part of a year to get all this planned,” Krajnovich said. “All we ask is for people to come and celebrate our labor brothers and sisters.”
