Carroll County search ends with discovery of body

---- — SAVANNA, Ill. — A Carroll County search ended Thursday morning with the discovery of the body of an unidentified female along the backwaters of the Mississippi River.

According to a press release from the Carroll County Sheriff’s Office, the office was notified by the Jo Daviess County Sheriff’s Office at 2:30 p.m. Wednesday of an abandoned vehicle near Lost Mound Conservation Area in the old Savanna Army Depot. Investigation of the area revealed footprints leading into a wooded area bordering the backwaters of the river. A large scale search began at 5 p.m., conducted by the Carroll County and Jo Daviess sheriff’s offices, the Hanover ambulance crew, U.S. Fish and Wildlife workers and fire departments from Hanover, Elizabeth, Savanna and Shannon, Ill. The search was called off at 10 p.m. Wednesday and resumed at 9 a.m. Thursday.

Searchers discovered the body of an unidentified female at 9:15 a.m. According to the press release, she died of an apparent self-inflicted gunshot wound.

Carroll County authorities were assisted by the Illinois State Police Crime Scene Services, Carroll County Coroner’s Office and Chris Lord, a Jo Daviess County resident who provided a helicopter.
