Cash for appliances to kick off in Illinois, Iowa to follow

CLINTON — The first phase of a spin-off of the popular Cash for Clunkers program that will allow Illinoisans to get money back for old appliances is set to start in late January.

The “cash for appliances” program is another effort by the federal government to stimulate the economy and encourage people to save energy through offering rebates.

The program is nationwide but each state will run the program differently. In Iowa, the program will not begin until March.

Each state was awarded federal money based on its population. Illinois received $12.4 million and Iowa garnered $2.8 million.

The way it works is that participating retailers will offer 10 to 25 percent off Energy Star qualified home appliances at point of sale, and there will be an additional rebate of $50 to $100 for recycling old appliances.

The discount will be given on one of each type of appliance, so a shopper who purchases a washer and a dryer will get a percentage off each item.

The first phase will be limited to select water heaters, gas and propane furnaces, gas boilers, central air conditioners and air source heat pumps.

The second phase takes place April 16 to 25 and will expand the scope to include select refrigerators, freezers, clothes washers, dishwashers, and room air conditioners.

Appliances must be used in the home, not for a business.

Shoppers should contact retailers to see if they are participating in the program.
