Clinton library fines can be pardoned

Food donations can be made to waive fines

CLINTON — Residents who fear returning the DVDs, books and other material checked out from the Clinton Public Library because of possible late fines can avoid shelling out the cash by donating food.

From Nov. 1 to 30, the Clinton Public Library is partnering with the Associate Benevolent Society to feed the hungry and allow residents to waive their fines.

It’s a program Library Director Amy Birtell said her organization has been thinking about implementing for around a year.

“This is the first time in a long, long time the library has done something like this so it will be interesting to see what it brings in,” Birtell said.

One dollar of fines will be waived for each non-expired canned or boxed non-perishable item a person brings in. The items will be donated to Clinton’s Associate Benevolent Society.

Associate Benevolent Society Director Paula Mallory got the call last week asking if she would be interested in partnering with the library.

“I thought that was awesome,” Mallory said. “It shows there’s community support out there. They recognize the need.”

Mallory said her organization’s food pantry is very busy. On Monday alone, 11 families received help with food through the pantry.

To give non-perishable items in place of the library fines, residents need to visit either the main library branch at 306 Eighth Ave. South or the Lyons branch, 105 Main Ave. with the items they are returning and the food donations.

“I’m hoping we’re going to be overwhelmed with donations.  We also want to get some of our materials back while helping the Benevolent Society with donations,” Birtell said.

Credit from the food donations do not apply to lost or damaged goods.
