CLINTON — A fire at 441 Sixth Ave. South is under investigation after firefighters from Clinton, Fulton and Camanche responded to the incident at 6:30 p.m. today. There were no injuries.

Clinton Battalion Chief Joel Atkinson said smoke and flames started on the south end of a two-story, five-apartment complex. Occupants were evacuated and firefighters were able to contain the situation by approximately 7:23 p.m. There are no known causes of the fire at this time, Atkinson said.

The fire originated in the southside upstairs unit which sustained extensive damage from heat, smoke and water damage, Atkinson said. Smoke damage moved throughout the building and other units were damaged from the heat.

"The one unit was gutted with a lot of heat and smoke damage. That came down the hall into a second apartment with heat and smoke damage," Atkinson said.

Authorities cleared the 400 block of pedestrians while responding to the incident. Atkinson confirmed that caution was taken to prevent ammunition in one of the units from igniting.

"But the fire didn't endanger it," Atkinson said.

Numerous vehicles and personnel arrived on scene. Atkinson said this was because of the size of the building.
