Agency eyes increase in recycling

CLINTON — The Clinton County Area Solid Waste Agency is looking into the possibility of increasing its cardboard recycling.

Director of Operations and Education Brad Seward reported recently that he was approached by one of the center’s current vendors about additional cardboard recycling. He will work with his staff to evaluate whether they can handle additional recycling.

“It’s good that we’re being approached and it’s potentially more opportunity out there for us,” Seward said. “Cardboard is one of the commodities that we are paid fairly handsomely for.”

This additional recycling could require the purchase of another baler and more staff. Seward said it would depend on how many more bales it would create. He said they would need someone with training to operate a second baler.

Clinton representative Jennifer Graf and Camanche representative Trevor Willis wondered if the additional revenue would not be worth the expense of the equipment and staff. Willis asked if Seward could market recycling to other vendors if the CCASWA gets another baler.

Seward added that another company might be interested in their services. He said they might need to perform a quick cost analysis on adding this recycling work.
