River Bend parents voice concerns about coach

FULTON, Ill. — The River Bend School Board this week told a group of parents that they need to meet with the high school principal and athletic director for concerns they have about one of the coaches.

More than a dozen distraught parents attended a special budget meeting Monday night at the district administrative office to voice concerns about a coach. The identity of the coach was not revealed during the open meeting.

Board President Dan Portz acknowledged hearing of an incident where some things were said back and forth. He asked if the parents had followed the proper chain of command in reporting these incidents, first to Athletic Director Joshua Knuth, Principal Chris Tennyson, Superintendent Chuck Holliday and then the board of education.

“We’re not trying to downplay anything that’s happened,” Portz said. “We don’t disagree that there is an issue and we don’t have a problem with that, but we need to make sure that we have people in place that are there to evaluate, take the concerns and see to it that something is being done.”

Tennyson told the group that he is aware of the incident and read the reports, but has not heard directly from anyone. He encouraged them to call or e-mail him and Knuth.

“I know that Mr. Knuth is new here. I’m new here. We want to get everything and we want to take care of our students,” Tennyson said.

Some parents expressed concerns that after talking to Knuth, their children experienced retaliation from the coach. Tennyson said if that is the case, they can certainly bring the matter to him. He offered to set up a meeting with himself, Knuth, the coach in question and any parents with the same complaint.
