No one injured in Wednesday afternoon fire at Alliant Energy

CLINTON — Clinton firefighters responded Wednesday afternoon for a fire at Alliant Energy, 2001 Beaver Channel Parkway.

Lt. Richard Johannsen confirmed that an alarm sounded at 4:27 p.m. and 11 firefighters arrived at 4:36 p.m. with two fire trucks, one fire engine, two ambulances and one command vehicle. A second alarm was called to cover the city, with the Fulton Fire Department asked to stand by.

Upon arrival, firefighters saw smoke coming from the seventh floor from a holding area in one of the bunkers at the site. Johannsen said water and a smothering agent were being applied to the fire when fire crews responded. A total of 1,500 gallons of water was used.

Johannsen said the fire was caused by coal sitting in moisture within a holding bin for too long, causing it to combust. He added that these fires happen from time to time if the coal is not moved in a couple of days. The fire was contained to the bunker.

“They just had to soak it down and that was basically it,” Johannsen said.

The fire department uses a smothering agent, which looks like foam, called F500. He said the compound encapsulates the molecules so they can’t get oxygen to burn. The fire department has this compound specifically for this type of incident.

The fire was extinguished at 5:04 p.m. and deemed to be totally out at 5:20 p.m. Firefighters left the scene at 5:57 p.m.

No one was injured in the fire.
