BREAKING: One dead, one missing after boat capsized on Mississippi

CLINTON — One adult is dead and another missing after a boat capsized in the Mississippi River earlier today, according to a press release from the Clinton County Sheriff's Office.

Deputies were dispatched at 11:34 a.m. to the Mississippi River at the Elk River mouth for a report of a boating accident with victims in the water. The press release states that the boat capsized in rough water and all occupants, including three adults, two small children, went into the water. Lieutenant Tom Paarman said rescuers are uncertain what caused the boat to capsize, but are speculating it was weather related due to the wind and waves.

One adult and the two children made it to shore, and one deceased adult was recovered from the water. Another adult remains missing, and a search is ongoing at this time.

Officials set up command at Bulger's Hollow, north of Clinton. Search boats launched from the area, said Paarman.

Paarman was unable to say if any of the occupants were wearing life jackets. A dog was also on board the boat, and is safe.

No names are being released at this time.

The Sheriff's Office was assisted on scene by Andover Fire, Clinton Fire, Camanche Fire, Sabula Fire, U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service, Clinton County Conservation, Iowa DNR, U.S. Coast Guard, and the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers.
