River Kings run away with Gateway Classic team title
CLINTON — The Clinton River Kings cruised to the Class A team title as they hosted the 88th Annual Gateway Classic at Bill Holsclaw Track on Tuesday.
The River Kings scored 147 points, easily outdistancing Pleasant Valley by 32 points.
The win gave Clinton their fourth straight Gateway Classic Championship and the eighth in nine years.
Senior Scott DeAngelis led the River Kings with four gold medals. DeAngelis broke the tape in the 400- (52.65) and 800- (2:03.05) meter runs and was part of winning relay teams in the 4x800 (8:24.67) and the 4x400 (3:29.79). Joining DeAngelis on the 4x800 were James Smith, Kaleb Frazier and Chris Teney.
Ethan Holmes was again solid, winning two individual golds and one relay gold on the night. The Clinton junior recorded individual wins in the 110-meter hurdles (14.62) and the 400 hurdles (53.41). Holmes also anchored the winning 4x400 relay team with a split of 50.20, according to head coach Tony Smith.
“He is a very talented individual,” Smith said. “He is a good leader and he has done a lot of hard work in the offseason to put himself in a position to be successful. He has earned everything he has accomplished.”
Holmes was pleased with his performance which included the three gold medals and a silver in the 4x200.
“I had PRs (personal records) in the 110 highs and the 400 lows and that got me really pumped up for the 4x400. I was hoping to run a 49 split, but I guess I ran in the low 50’s.” Holmes said.
David Johnson joined Holmes as a 3-time winner. The Clinton sophomore won the high jump with a jump of 6-0, the 200-meter dash with a time of 22.91 and ran the leadoff leg of the 4x400 which also included Frazier.
The River Kings did well in the throws as junior Matt Murphy slung the discus 134-9 for the win and took third in the shot put with a distance of 45-6.
Jaryd Prince was runner-up in the shot put with a toss of 46 2 1/2.
The shuttle hurdle relay team of Tyler Redman, Devan Ebensberger, Jordan Camp and Jake Mangler gave the Kings a second place finish as did Teney in the 400-meter dash.
“It’s nice come out and compete like this at home,” Smith said of his team’s title winning performance. “We ran some good times on a nice night. There were a lot of people that contributed. It was a total team effort, just a good night.”
