Central DeWitt girls take title at their own meet

DEWITT — The Central DeWitt Sabers took the team title as they hosted the Pam Duncan Relays in DeWitt on Monday.

The Sabers scored 85 team points to beat Western Dubuque by 10 points. The Clinton River Queens came in fifth with 62 points, while Camanche was seventh with 44. Northeast was close behind with 43 as Calamus-Wheatland (28) was 10th and Maquoketa (12) was 12th.

Central had two wins with one individual and one relay gold. Kayla Selby was first in the 100-meter dash with a time of 12.97.

The Saber’s 4x200 team took first with a time of 1:50.44.

Clinton’s Larissa Wilden and Cortni Kooi provided the River Queens with two gold medals as Wilden won the 200-meter dash with a clocking of 26.41 and Kooi won the long jump with a leap of 16-10.

Northeast sophomore Morgan Casey won three golds with a win in the 800-meter run (2:23.77) and as the anchor of the 4x400 relay and distance medley teams. The foursome of Demi Diedrich, Maria Rickertsen, Audrey Moehr and Casey teamed up to win the 4x400 in a time of 4:17.92 and the distance medley in 4:26.56.

The Camanche Indians had a pair of individual runner-up finishes with Ashley Gonzalez in the 100-meter hurdles and Sarah Powell in the discus.

Clinton head coach June Wilden was pleased with her team’s performance in the field events, especially Ashley Loerzel.

“In the field events we scored very well, Ashley had a lifetime best in the discus,” Wilden said. “That was very good.”

“We have to become a more steady and balanced team overall,” Wilden added. “I’m hoping that we show that at Dubuque.”

The River Queens will travel to Dubuque Senior to compete in a meet hosted by Dubuque Hempstead.
