Prince of Peace soccer team wins

DUBUQUE — The Prince of Peace Irish soccer team earned another win Monday evening as they worked past Marquette Catholic for a 5-2 victory.

Marquette's Nick Konrardy notched the game's first goal in the 14th minute to give the Mohawks an early 1-0 lead.

The Irish would tie the game in the 25th minute when Kevin Schnier dribbled out of the midfield and found Keaton Connell on the outside. Connell then sent in a driven ball for Victor Sparapane, who finished the sequence to tie the game.

The Mohawks struck again in the 39th minute with another goal by Konrardy making the score 2-1, with Marquette looking to take the lead into halftime.

With seconds remaining in the half, Irish freshman forward Derek Witt took matters into his own hands dribbling through the Marquette back line using quality service from the Irish midfield, and tying the score 2-2. The game-tying goal was Witt's first in an Irish jersey.

In the second half the Irish used a balanced attack to create goals by Connell in the 60th and the 72nd, and a final strike by Riley Bly in the 73rd. Bly and Sparapane both provided assists in the sequence.

The Irish improve to 3-5-2 on the year. They will host Cedar Rapids Kennedy at Camanche High School on Thursday at 4:30 p.m.

“Marquette did a nice job of getting an early goal and putting us in the position to play from behind,” Irish head coach Brandon Connell said. “Our first half goals by Sparapane and Witt were key efforts in getting a result in this match.”

“The goals and assists by Bly and Connell were top notch in this match,” Connell continued. “And the play of Ben Carr, Andy Schnier and Dan Schnier were equally solid. I was also impressed with the play in our reserve match where Roman Meyers and Nick Lucritz both scored quality goals for us. Even our youngest players are beginning to play well, which is a great sign for our team.”
