Northeast's Casey finishes 14th in 3,000 at Drake Relays

DES MOINES — The 99th Annual Drake Relays kicked off on Thursday with the high school division competing in field events and the 3,000- and 3,200-meter runs.

In the 3,000, Northeast sophomore Morgan Casey turned in a solid performance on her way to a 14th place finish. Casey completed the race in a time of 10:42.90, while winner Katie Flood of Dowling Catholic broke the tape in 9:56.23.

Trisha Miller of Maquoketa was seconds behind Morgan. The junior finished 18th with a time of 10:59.17.

The only other area entrant competing on Thursday was Central DeWitt junior Adam McDonnell in the discus. McDonnell finished 24th after not recording a throw.

Iowa City West’s Thomas Reynolds won the event with a toss of 191-0.

A pair of Mississippi Athletic Conference athletes claimed gold medals on the first day of competition.

Pleasant Valley’s Devin Allbaugh crossed the finish line first in the 3,200-meter run in a time of 9:22.01.

Danielle Frere of Muscatine took first in the shot put. Frere recorded a toss of 48-2 3/4 in the win.
