River Kings send six to MAC championship round

PLEASANT VALLEY — The Clinton River Kings advanced six to the finals at the first day of the Mississippi Athletic Conference Boys Tennis Tournament at Pleasant Valley.

The River Kings have compiled 14.5 points heading into the final round, trailing MAC leading Bettendorf by just one-and-a-half points.

The tournament will resume tonight at Davenport West, with the Southpark Tennis Club in Moline, Ill. serving as the rain site.

Competing for conference championships for the River Kings will be Jan Wecker in the No. 2 singles bracket, Elliott Deering in No. 3 singles, and Drew Lakin in No. 4 singles.

All three doubles teams have made it to the championship round with Josh Lawrence and Deering in the No. 1 slot, Lakin and Stephen McEleney in the No. 2 slot and Wecker and Sullivan at No. 3.

Lawrence (No. 1 singles), McEleney (No. 5 singles) and Sullivan (No. 6 singles) will compete for third place in their respective brackets after losing in the semifinals.

“The team played great,” Clinton head coach Dave Moore said of the River Kings’ performance. “We got points from every single spot and we had some tie-breaks and we pulled them out. They’re winners in my book.”
