Queens send eight entries to state meet

CLINTON — The Clinton River Queens found out on Saturday that Sarah Wenzel would not be their lone participant at the Iowa State Track and Field meet in Des Moines this weekend.

Friday night all head coach June Wilden knew for sure was that Wenzel had qualified with her second place showing in the long jump.

She also knew that their were a number of events the River Queens had a good shot of receiving at large bids in. In Iowa Girls Class 4A, the top two finishers in each district advance, then the next 12 performances from across the state are selected to qualify.

All in all, Clinton will send athletes to Des Moines to compete in eight events.

Joining Wenzel in the long jump will be senior Cortni Kooi, who qualified with a leap of 16-7 1/4, while Wenzel made it with a jump of 17-7, which was the fourth best jump in the Class 4A field.

Larissa Wilden will represent Clinton individually in the high jump as her regional best of 5-3 was good enough for the third best height in the Class 4A field.

Ashley Loerzel will compete in the discus and shot put, giving Clinton a state qualifier in all four field events.

Loerzel recorded a throw of 37-8 in the shot put and 106-11 in the discus to qualify.

Senior Whitney Miller ran a time of 1:06.36 to qualify in the 400-meter hurdles.

The River Queens shuttle hurdle relay team of Wilden, Kiera Williams, Melissa Kremer and Amanda Kristensen qualified with a time of 1:07.35.

Williams, Wenzel, Kooi and Wilden teamed up to qualify in the 4x100 with a clocking of 50.46.

The foursome also made it in the 4x200 with a qualifying time of 1:47.71.

The eight River Queens will join the 13 River Kings that qualified on Friday at the Iowa State Track and Field meet in Des Moines at Drake University’s Drake Stadium from Thursday through Friday.
