Clinton athletes fare well at state
DES MOINES — The Clinton River Kings and Queens turned in solid performances at the Iowa State Track and Field Meet in Des Moines on Thursday.
In boys action junior Matt Murphy turned in a personal best in the Class 4A discus competition. Murphy uncorked a throw of 143-11, good for 13th in the field.
Iowa City West’s Thomas Reynolds won the event with a toss of 191-10.
Clinton senior Jordan Camp placed 15th in the high jump with a height of 5-10. The winning height was 6-10 by Waterloo West’s TrayVonn Wright.
Clinton’s 4x800-meter relay team of Scott DeAngelis, Kaleb Frazier, James Smith and Chris Teney took 14th in the event with a time of 8:11.78. Waukee took gold with a time of 7:53.52.
In the preliminaries of the shuttle hurdles the River Kings’ foursome of Tyler Redman, Zane Pennock, Camp and Jake Mangler placed 20th.
Despite not scoring any team points Clinton head coach Tony Smith was pleased with his team’s overall performance.
“I thought the 4x800 performed well,” Smith said. “We weren’t seeded real high, so we were looking to improve our times and our places. This is a good experience for our younger kids.
“Jordan Camp went out on a good note in the high jump. It was a good opportunity to go out at the state meet.”
The River Kings will look to move up in the team standings today as Ethan Holmes will look to add a state championship in the 400-meter hurdles to go along with the Drake Relays gold he won last month in the event.
Smith is optimistic about his team’s prospects.
“We’ve got more events, so we are looking forward to the events where we are seeded higher,” he said. “Hopefully at this point we are running at our best.”
Meanwhile, the Clinton High girls competed in three events Thursday.
The Queens’ shuttle hurdle relay unit of Larissa Wilden, Whitney Miller, Kiera Williams and Melissa Kremer finished 11th in prelims and did not advance to the final.
Wilden took 15th in the high jump with a height of 5-0. Davenport North’s AG Bradford won the event with a height of 5-8.
Clinton senior Ashley Loerzel was 15th in the discus with a toss of 106-8. Taylor Freeman of Iowa City West won the event with a distance of 156-4.
Clinton head coach June Wilden had mixed feeling about her team’s day at Drake Stadium.
“It was a day that some kids were probably disappointed with their performances and others were happy,” Wilden said. “Three of the four shuttle hurdlers ran their best times.
“Larissa was a little disappointed. She didn’t feel she hurdled well. Ashley (Loerzel) had a pretty good day with a throw of 106-8. She is really looking forward to the shot put.”
Note: Due to technical difficulties photos from the state meet were not available.
