Northeast wins state relay title

DES MOINES — The Northeast quartet of Shaun Eberhart, Jordan Howe, Baron Loots and Ryan Krogmann ran their way into the school’s record books on Thursday at the Iowa State Track and Field meet in Des Moines.

The foursome won the state title in the Class 1A 4x800-meter relay with a school-record time of 8:09.99.

The win was only the school’s second state title ever. Larry Harmon won the high jump in 1981 to give the Rebels their first ever.

Eberhart led off the race and gave the Rebels the early lead despite stumbling on the back stretch.

Howe ran a personal best time split in the second leg of the relay. He handed the baton to Baron Loots who overtook Northeast Hamilton’s Dirk Timm in the third leg and gave the baton to anchor Ryan Krogmann with the lead.

Krogmann turned in a split time of 1:55 to lead the Rebels to the win despite being passed momentarily.

The foursome, all juniors, will be back to defend their title next year in Class 2A as Northeast will move up a class after adding East Central.

Eberhart, Loots and Krogmann were part of the team that took second at last year’s meet.

“We have been looking forward to this since we got second last year,” Eberhart said. “Anything short of first would have been a disappointment.”

Howe echoed the sentiments of his teammate.

“We came out to Drake and were disappointed with our performance,” he said. “It left a bad taste in our mouths. Anything less than a championship would have been a disappointment. Now we are going to have to work even harder next year because we are not going to sneak up on anyone.”

Meanwhile, Krogmann and Loots reveled in the victory.

“This is awesome,” Loots said. “This is the best feeling I’ve ever had in my life, winning this title.”

“I feel great,” Krogmann said. “This definitely makes all the training worth it. I was pretty happy with my performance. The other three guys made the race for us.”

Northeast head coach Mike Mattis was understandably happy for his team.

“They did what they had to do,” said Mattis. “We figured if we had the lead our guy at the end (Krogmann) isn’t going to get beat. They worked their butts off and they deserve it. People make you earn it at state.”

Prince of Peace’s Drew Sikkema also turned in a fine performance as the Irish junior was third in the 3,200-meter run with a time of 10:05.08. Sikkema led for a time early in the race.

“I felt good early on,” Sikkema said. “There are so many good runners out here you know somebody is going to set a pretty good pace and I was just fighting for position. I was trying for a place and third is pretty good I guess.”

In the 400-meter dash Andrew’s Corey Manders took sixth place with a time of 51.22.

Northeast’s Derek Ketelsen had a best toss of 48-5 in the shot put, good for seventh.

In Class 2A Bellevue’s Brandt Moore took 11th in the 3,2000-meter run with a time of 10:05.38.

The Central DeWitt boys were led on Thursday by junior Michael Burke’s eighth-place finish in the Class 3A high jump.

Burke cleared 6-0 in the event that was won by Anamosa’s Colten Kelly with a jump of 6-11.

The Sabers’ Ben Lubben competed in the 100- and 200-meter dashes, failing to make the finals in either event.

Central DeWitt head coach Jared Birt was hoping for better performances, but is optimistic about today.

“We were hoping Michael would jump 6-2 and get us some points, but he did pretty well,” Birt said. “Ben Lubben didn’t get into the finals, but we knew he wouldn’t make it with his times coming in. (Today) will be a better day.”

In girls action Preston’s Lauryn Camp highlighted the day for the Trojans. The senior broke the school record in the shot put with a toss of 36-8 to take third in the Class 1A field.

Teammate Trista Shannon added a fourth-place finish in the 400-meter dash with a time of 59.85.

“Lauryn and Trista were outstanding today,” Preston-East Central head coach Mike Kelly said. “Lauryn broke the school record, and she was pleased with that.

“Trista was in the fast heat and after the last turn she was right there and she just out-ran them as she has done all year. We have 11 team points so far and 20 is our goal, so hopefully we do well (today).”

Calamus-Wheatland’s Molly Slattery turned in a time of 10:58.15 in the 3,000-meter run, which was good for fourth in Class 1A.

“I ran the way my coach told me to,” Slattery said. “I was further back than I wanted to be, but then I was able to pass some people at the end.

“I knew there were two studs in the field and if I could sneak in for third or fourth that would be good, so I am happy with fourth.”

In Class 2A Camanche’s McKinzie McDaniel turned in a time 26.87 in the 200-meter dash preliminaries to qualify for the finals.

“McKinzie ran well,” Camanche head coach Brenda Metzger said. “Obviously we are thrilled that she made the finals.”

Bellevue’s Molly Sieverding also qualified for finals. Sieverding made it in the 100-meter dash with a clocking of 13.03.

In Class 3A Maquoketa’s Trisha Miller gave the Cardinals a runner-up finish in the 3,000-meter run. Miller turned in a time of 10:37.21.

Central DeWitt’s Kayla Selby qualified for the finals in both the 100- and 200-meter dashes with times of 13.07 and 26.57, respectively.

The Sabers’ Erin Burmester placed fourth in the discus with a toss of 121-10.
