LumberKings get past Chiefs

Greene drives in 3 in Clinton’s fifth straight win

PEORIA, Ill. — The Clinton LumberKings continued their winning ways on Thursday as they took a 5-4 win over the Peoria Chiefs in Midwest League action.

The LumberKings used a three-run fourth inning to rally from a two-run deficit on their way to their fifth straight win.

Jonathan Greene tallied three RBIs in the contest to lead the way for the Clinton offense.

LumberKings starting pitcher Tim Murphy went five innings and allowed two runs on two hits. He received a no-decision after leaving the game with a 3-2 lead.

Peoria’s Dylan Johnston hit a two-run home run in the second inning to stake the Chiefs to a 2-0 lead.

The LumberKings big fourth started with a double from the hot hitting Tim Smith. The two-bagger was Smith’s 25th of the year.

Mithcell Moreland followed with another double, his 36th, to put runners at second and third with no outs.

After a Justin Smoak pop out to center field, Greene drove in two of his three runs with a double to right field, scoring Smith and Moreland.

Greene moved to third on a wild pitch, then scored on a Miguel Alfonzo ground out to second base.

The Chiefs managed to tie the game in the sixth inning.

Jovan Rosa tripled, then scored on a Luis Bautista sacrifice fly to center.

The LumberKings regained the lead in the top of the seventh as Greene recorded his 21st home run and 83rd RBI of the season with a solo shot to center field.

In the bottom of the eighth inning, Peoria tied the game again as Josh Harrison hit a solo home run.

Clinton took the lead for good in the top of the ninth.

Moreland singled to center, then Smoak doubled giving the LumberKings runners at second and third.

After a Greene pop out, the Chiefs intentionally walked Alfonzo.

Carlos Dominguez hit a grounder to second to get Alfonzo out at second.

Moreland managed to score though to give Clinton the 5-4 lead.

Newly acquired closer, Mark Hamburger came on in the bottom of the ninth. After a Rebel Ridling single, Hamburger got the next three batters to pop out to collect his second save and end the game.

With the win, Clinton is now 35-31 and will head to Cedar Rapids to take on the Kernel in a four-game set tonight through Monday. It will be the final four games for the LumberKings with a day off on Tuesday, before the Midwest League Playoffs start on Wednesday.
