Front row boosts Clinton past Davenport Assumption

River Queens improve to 4-1 in MAC after sweep

CLINTON — Boosted by solid play along its frontline, Clinton swept Davenport Assumption 25-21, 25-15, 25-21 in Mississippi Athletic Conference volleyball Tuesday night at Yourd Gymnasium.

Leisha Harris had 11 kills and six blocks for the River Queens (11-8, 4-1 MAC), who had split matches with Assumption earlier this season. The Knights had beaten Clinton at the Muscatine Invitational earlier this month, while the River Queens avenged that loss this past Saturday at the Clinton tournament.

Tuesday’s opening game was close most of the way before the River Queens pulled it out late. Clinton jumped ahead 10-3 in Game 2, building its lead on the serving of Sarah Massey.

Assumption took a 19-15 lead in the third game, but Clinton battled back and pulled even on the serving of Devynn Paulsen. With the score tied at 20, Mallory Voss served four consecutive points for Clinton, which eventually pulled out the win on a sideout.

Voss finished with five aces for Clinton, and she also had eight kills. Paulsen recorded nine kills.

Assumption (0-4 MAC) was led by Melissa Hayward, who had 10 kills and 24 digs.

Clinton also won the sophomore and junior varsity matches each by a 2-0 score.
